You can be frustrated or angry that you weren’t picked to work on a project or work with a client, or you can look ahead at what to do for the next time.  Here’s a few things that work:

1.  Be eager, but not too eager  Looking too hungry for anything is a turnoff and shows a lack of self-confidence rather than your passion for the work. 
2.  Be visible, but not too in their face  I once had a friend who showed up at a smaller company she wanted to work for and asked questions of the receptionist, including showing her resume and stating her interest to meet the manager.  The receptionist told her they weren’t interviewing anyone, but my friend requested a short conversation with the manager anyway in a polite and professional way.  She wasn’t rude, demanding or even over the top.  She was prepared to leave if there wasn’t going to be an opening for this.  The manager overhearing the confident woman at the front desk, poked her head around the corner to see who this enthusiastic woman was.  My friend got an interview and was later hired.  
3.  Be informed, but don’t overdue it  Stay current through social networking, top industry blogs, top newsletters and newspapers, to know leading news about your client’s industry changes.  For example, a client of mine was a marketer.  She had a big client whose popular cosmetic line she marketed.  When I located two key articles about competitors to her client’s company and new promotions they were offering, I passed it on to my client.  This was unexpected “beyond the call of duty” service and my client acknowledged it and was grateful to be able to share the information to her client.  I didn’t barrage my client with articles or information, but was able to provide something helpful that showed I had her best interests at heart and was thinking of her mid-sessions as well.

It seems fitting in this time of celebrating our country’s independence and our collective efforts in maintaining those freedoms, that we should stop to look at what our efforts have provided us in our own career and personal development. As I encourage my clients to pause and reflect on what projects, programs, products, new careers or businesses, new partnerships or working staff, along with the personal achievements they launched and faithfully pursued to ultimate or ongoing success?I encourage YOU to do the same and celebrate yourself.

For me it has been quite a journey since launching my coaching business fulltlime in September 1995. There have been new programs, products, policies and peaks, all of which I’m proud of. I recruited a handful of experts to help me with my website, blog setups and their ongoing revisions, have experts helping me oversee my business accounting, my marketing efforts, and more. I’m also grateful for the work I do solo and the new clients in this past year who have trusted me to work with them on personal matters and in their careers.

So for yourself, take stock of your early launches and where those efforts have got you today and be grateful for the freedom and joy it has provided you! Hint: Begin with, “what are my favorite 3 accomplishments in the last year?”

My week-long master coach conference in Missouri is having powerful leader facilitated conversations.  One such session was led by Zen Master Genpo Merzel, who quieted our busy coach minds, turning us to look inward at any areas where we held on to dissatisfaction or incompletedness with ourselves, calling this the disowned (vs. owned) parts of our self.

As coaching is mired in powerful questions, one question that came up in conjunction with this was, ”Do you have any resistance to have your accomplishments visible in the world?”  Another was, “Do you sometimes feel like a fake or fraud or stupid in your work and, if so, do you acknowledge that feeling or ignore it?”

There were many more powerful questions that caused me to look at the interplay between my internal and external voices and how they talk with each other.  Even for a master life coach, these inner/outer parts of oneself can sometime stay hidden in order to continue habitual ways of responding.  Becoming aware of this allows me to be more accessible to myself and others.
