Counter Holiday Blues, 6 Activities to Connect With Others
If your family doesn’t live near you for you to visit this holiday, or friends are all away seeing their family, you still want to experience the spirit of the holiday season – and that means connection with others. Here’s 6 ideas how:
1. Start with any friends who live locally and see if they’ve got any time to get together even in-between their other plans. Even if they’ve only got a half hour, call them and swing by with some eggnog for a chat and to view their decorations. You’ll be glad you did.
2. Decorate your own abode with others. You don’t have to use expensive items, in fact making the old-fashioned paper chains, hanging strung popcorn, or old cut-out Christmas cards, looks nice and can be fun to make. Invite some grammar school kids on your block who want to do this with you. Set a time, put in the supplies, introduce yourself to their parents and have fun being playful with your own decoration creation party. 3. Call a local church to see if they’re doing home visits where you can join with others to see those in need and bring a gift or food basket you or the church provides.
4. Visit an ill friend and bring them some homemade food. (I just visited a friend who is healing after surgery. She appreciated my helpful food for her and her family. Her attitude about her own journey and recovery was so inspiring, that I left feeling happy and positive and had a sense that I’d made a difference too).
5. Call a local homeless shelter to volunteer to feed the homeless at their meal celebration time or even a regular dinner.
6. Wrap presents in a group with others to help someone who is overwhelmed enjoy their holiday better. You can also look into last minute store needs to wrap gifts and make a little extra cash.
Some of the time you can kick back and listen to your favorite holiday CD’s or watch a few favorite holiday movies, but don’t stay stuck inside the whole time or isolated – there are plenty of easy ways that with a little effort, you can be part of the experience of this beautiful season, sharing it with others.
