Time Traveler’s Reflections and Tips

TimeTravelOkay, so I’ve never officially “time traveled” myself (physically moved into the past or future between different points in space within a brief period of present time), except in my dreams…that is that I am aware of.   Yet, time travel is a concept I can relate to in many ways.  Maybe it was the daydreaming I did in school or in my room in my noisy household of ten to escape and get privacy.  Maybe it’s the time in meditation years ago when I was deeply meditating and suddenly I had left my body and was looking down at it from above for a moment before re-entering it.  Maybe it was the many other lifetimes I feel I’ve experienced in this one.

Time traveling shows up in many forms.

I used to work with a woman in a health food supermarket.  We’d take our lunch breaks in the outdoor employee seating area and she’d face the sun and close her eyes and open them five minutes later with a glow on and seemingly refreshed.  When I asked her what she was thinking, she’d reply, “I was just taking a trip to Bali” (or “the Incas”) or many other wonderful far away and exotic places.  She never had to go there (though in later years she did), but just sitting using her imagination, she was time traveling.

I saw the movie The Time Traveler’s Wife last week after having finished the book on a plane.  It’s kind of a lovely blue note on a relationship, which had been formed during the man’s many time traveling experiences and the impact of that unexpected travel on them both.  It wasn’t always pleasant times they shared, as he had little control over his sudden disappearances and arrivals, and it was wearing on the couple.  The movie left me feeling reflective about time and how I spend it.  I felt a deep appreciation for the time I have with others and an awareness of the time so many of us spend wishing we weren’t doing what we are.  Such a useless pastime.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel, read only a page” (St. Augustine).  This quote makes me think about the gifts inherent in the many forms of travel to enjoy the unique offerings of our world, while balancing those benefits with the simple joy and satisfaction of being just where you are.  It’s the reason I became a life coach, so I could help people to do just that.

For fun I’ve compiled a list of  favorite time traveling books and movies and a few recommended to me I’ve not yet seen, but are on the list.  Email info@creatingatwill.com and put “time travel” in your subject line for me to send them to you.  Also, leave a comment with your favorites.
