Brainstorming-Brainwriting
Yesterday I participated in a marketing ideation and business building group process for Tyson Food Services. It occurred to me to share two of the methods for idea-generating that we used and that could be helpful for you when you’re working with groups in project development phases.
Bend It Like Beckham divx Brainstorming is commonly known as open, non-censoring group discussion, where each problem-solving member spontaneously contributes ideas. We used brainstorming which is immediately creative and expansive (a converging ideas approach) before we introduced the diverging, critical process of narrowing down ideas, fine-tuning them and deciding which ones we’d act on.
The Keeper ipod Also in the creative stage we did brainwriting, which is an individual writing process that captures the strengths of one’s own quiet, and sometimes confidential, thinking process. We used this at various times throughout the day as we continued to open up to new ideas and build on ideas already put forth.

The article Brainwriting is Brainstorming on Steroids talks about the benefits of brainwriting over brainstorming. Yet if during the brainstorming process judging your own or another person’s ideas positively or negatively has been forewarned, which was the case from our facilitator when we started, you will be prepared to catch yourself doing this and come back to open brainstorming, resulting in your group’s abilty to equally benefit from both outspoken group work and the silent writing process.
