Judging Your Book by Its Cover
It’s a trap that we all fall into when we quickly size up a situation and think we have all the answers, but we don’t. Even an experienced coach strategist like me has found myself part way down the road with a client, only to realize that I don’t have all the information and I have to back track. This was driven home to me yet again recently when I viewed Susan Boyle’s video on youtube.Susan is a plain woman from an English village where she volunteers for the church, but she has aspirations to be a famous singer. Like others who saw her walk out on Britain’s Got Talent television show, her mousy appearance made most of us assume she would not do well. But when she opened her mouth, she sounded like a sweet angel and all the jaws in the room, including my own, gaped in surprise and awed appreciation.
Susan knew she had what it took and she didn’t care that she didn’t have the perfect packaging. She won out the cynics with her confidence and focus and she had the skills to back it up, which will open doors for her. You too may be judging yourself harshly and be missing out on going after your dreams.
