Lovers and Other Strangers
Today I am having a great day. My husband and I don’t have too much planned – a nice afternoon and dinner with family – but we’re just enjoying a morning to ourselves. We’ve had a few giggles together over nothing of real importance. We sometimes stop and marvel in the strange, idiosyncratic ways we each have and how we “deserve each other,” an expression we sometimes use to kid one another about a side of ourselves that is fresh and even weird at times.Experiencing love with another human being has become so much more complex than it was ever intended to be. We’re all strange in different ways and, fundamentally, we just have to find someone whose strangeness is sufficiently compatible with our own. In fact, I’d recommend you inject a mood of playfulness and creativity into new relationships so you can appreciate just how strange people really are and whether they can be comfortable letting themselves be known to you in that way.
Humor and play are excellent ingredients for connection, not to mention getting things done without having them be hard. Next time you’re engaged with a stranger in some activity, like standing at a valet stop waiting for your car, try letting your hair down a little with the person or persons next to you and strike up a conversation to experience our undeniable human affinity.
