Direction Guide
I notice that very often when I go out for a walk, someone stops me to ask for directions. Yesterday, I thought it curious that in a 30 minute walk, two different drivers stopped to ask me how to get somewhere. I enjoyed being helpful. I realize that this is a fundamental value that underlines my work with people. Oftentimes it’s best in coaching if someone can sense their own ability to self-direct. In that case, I ask lots of questions and be a good sounding board to cause them to consider their many possibilities. Other times it’s useful when they are in a totally new environment for me to help guide them or suggest they go a particular direction to get more immediate results.
Another analogy that comes to mind is the Indian guide who walks slightly ahead to clear the pathway for those who are following and also to look and see if this seems to be the right direction. Other times we are standing together (client and I) looking out over a beautiful vista at their life and they are pointing the direction they see themselves walking, while I come along for support.

It is up to each of us to find our path and walk it, in harmony with our surroundings, asking others when we need direction and being there to support others who ask us.
