Contagious Enthusiasm
This morning at the dentist, I noticed how cheery my dental hygienist was. This isn’t unusual for her. In fact, the whole office is always smiling and pleasant. It’s almost like I want to ask them, “what happened?” as if I missed out on an inside joke. But the truth is they consistently generate a great deal of enthusiasm. I commented on this as I was paying my bill and the office staff laughed and enjoyed my comments. I left their office feeling upbeat and humming a tune heard on their overhead stereo system. (They let each of the dentist’s assistants bring in their favorite CD’s and the songs are on a rotating playlist so everyone’s style is represented and validated.)
Driving home I thought about the word, enthusiasm. It’s true that your attitude accounts for your outlook. I also thought about the old expression, fake it till you make it
Bad Taste full and yet how often we do the opposite. We’re resistant to break out of our own thinking and emotions to share a smile or kind word unless we “feel like it.”
The Greek origin of the word enthusiasm comes from inspiration of the presence of God
and literally, God breathed. If you think of this just as you feel you’re in a tight spot, discontented, or not feeling like communicating with others, take a deep breath and let the breath wash over you and fill you to renewal. You can re-inspire yourself.
