Career Advancement-A Bird’s Eye View
Are you getting passed over for a promotion? Do you feel your boss doesn’t see your strengths and rally to your side? When was the last time you took a serious bird’s eye view of yourself? Here’s a few suggestions for how to do that:
1) Write down your strengths. A complete brain dump. These are personal and professional traits and characteristics. (Everything you know you’re good at).
2) Separate out those that are relational/interpersonal and attitude based from those that are skill based.
3) Separate further those skills that are transferrable to the job you’re looking to get.
4) Review that job’s profile and determine if you have all the criteria it’s asking for. Are you sure? Ask someone who has worked with you and those who know your personality well to give you honest feedback about yourself and to rank your top ten personality and top ten business traits.
5) Is there any area you need to strengthen? If so, begin that today. Ask your boss for their honest input, while you communicate your strong interest in the promotion, build a case for yourself and let him/her know your improvement plan.Bottom line, don’t be unprepared. Get an aerial view of yourself and use the feedback from others to clearly see if the new job is a match. Then help others to see it too.
What do you know of your strengths and weaknesses and how are you improving your career ?
